Theology of Worship

Christ-Exalting Worship: My Theology of Worship

Every human heart has been given the immense capacity for God Himself (Isa 55:1-3; Prov 20:5; Ps 34:8-10; 63:1-5; 73:25-26; 81:10). Jeremiah Burroughs once said, "A soul that is capable of God can be filled with nothing else but God." Therefore, the goal of musical worship is to express this deep longing for God Himself through song. In the act of singing, believers are mutually taught and encouraged in the abiding truths of Scripture (Col 3:16; Eph 5:18-20). Music has the unique capacity to engage both the mind and heart. The central content of our worship must culminate in Jesus Christ (1 Cor 15:3-4; 2:2). Therefore, every service must center around the good news of the gospel.

Philosophy for Worship Ministry

The music ministry must center around the human voice, for the culmination of praise to God is the human voice (Ps 150). With the congregation as the most important instrument, any other instruments must serve to promote the congregational singing. Therefore, the music must be free from any distractions so that the congregation can focus on the mutually upbuilding act of singing corporately. I also believe music should represent a variety of styles and forms (choir, orchestra, solo piano, etc.), so that the emphasis is not the music itself but in the unchanging truth of our unchanging God. Style will change, but God's truth will always abide (Matt 24:35). Since songs are what people really remember, we must equip God's people with proper language and theology through the songs we choose to be able to encounter the trials of life in a biblical way. Songs implant truth deeply within each believer.
